Looks like I got lucky with my old chrome book. All my knowledge about linux can fit on a post-it note, but I was able to install Mint on my chrome book within about an hour. The most time consuming part of the process was opening the case so I could remove the write protect screw from the board.
There was another critical problem: where was the kernel image? An Alpine usermps posted an installation script for the Acer R13 Chromebook, which includeda linux-elm package in the list. Unfortunately, no equivalent package existedyet for the C201 in the Alpine repos, either linux-veyron (the ChromeOSkernel) or linux-armv7-chromebook (mainline). However, the Arch Linux ARMlinux-veyron package worked, even if the kernel version was very old (3.14.0).
